when cousin christy got back from the motherland and was showing us her pictures, a couple really caught my eye. crazy uncle david has turned grandma alma's backyard into a garden - a little heavy on the cabbage, but very nice looking. now my backyard is full, but what if... my front yard is just a pain in the ass that needs mowing. i've got no great love of putting green lawns, unlike my grass-nazi neighbors. i could so see tilling it up and making a front yard farm. i saved the seeds from the volunteer tomato from hell that took over the backyard last summer (thank you birdie). i could put in some more vines, squash, beets, leafy greens, roots and tubers. i might call the fence guys up, and see how much it would cost to get the front yard done. it could be fun.

I endorse this line or reasoning!

but the real question is, do we fence the front yard or not. I kind of like the idea of wrapping the front yard in a privacy fence just to keep the damn neighborkids from cutting across the yard/garden. Also, I am a bit of a hermit once I make it home (thanks dad) so I like the idea of being hidden away.

I'm inclined to fence because I hate people like my privacy. On the other hand, any fence worth its salt needs to be 6 - 8 feet tall, which would block a significant amount of light. If you get pretty good light and the yard is big enough, fence! If you need that light and the fence would block lot, hmmm.... maybe a different strategy? A hedge? A hop hedge!
