for the past few days, every newspaper/news website i see is all about 'harold pinter the playwright is dead'. never heard of him. Tory's a big theater geek, she's never heard of him either.
is this a real news story, or just the media congratulating themselves for knowing something obscure?

It's a real news story, as much as anyone dying of natural causes is a real news story. He's a nobel prizewinner in literature.

And they reference him on Red Dwarf.

Pinter

I "met" Pinter in a Theatre of the Absurd theater class. His biggest stuff was big in the 50' and 60's--when I was young. By the 70's he was adapting novels to the stage and screen--that is how the media is erroneously saying he wrote "The French Lieutenant's Woman" which Fowles wrote. My favorites are "The Birthday Party," "The Caretaker," and "The Homecoming"--which I had to almost memorize. I think you would like his stuff. His plays seem lightly humorous--but very deep black comedy really--the kind that the early Saturday Night Live tried desperately to approach. All are centered on some ridiculous impossibility. Not like "Waiting for Godot" or "Chairs" or "Rhinoceros" which are obviously not real situations. Pinter's could horribly be happening next door or down stairs. As a matter of fact, I have my copies of "The Caretaker," "The Dumb Waiter," "The Birthday Party," and "The Room" right here. When you come down, I will slip them into your bag.

Something came from my English degrees--When they die I remember what they wrote.

Never heard of him. I'm no theater geek, though. I'm a little more sad that Eartha Kitt shuffled off this mortal coil, honestly. Such memories I have of my early 20's loving her records and thinking I was so cool!
