a week ago today at this time, i was in olympia, wa headed south on I-5. 2973 miles and 5 days later i pulled in to brad's diveway in sunshine, a few miles upriver from st. gabriel, la. as far as long drives go, it was a good one. Bruce H. Element ran like a champ the whole way without a hiccup. the scenery in central california was a little dreary, it being winter and all, but not too boring. los angeles traffic was a little annoying, mostly because it was dark the whole time i was there, and partly because one of the less endearing qualities of california drivers is RIDING THE ASS of the person in front of them no matter how fast the person in front of them is going. monday: valencia, CA to las cruces, NM was a long freakin' day. i got a ticket in benson, AZ for a u-turn coming out of a gas station, but the cop was nice about it. otherwise it was 800 miles of desert and mountains. i had the best meal of my trip that night - new mexican-style stacked enchiladas with green chile sauce. i didn't sleep that well because it was at 4200 feet, and my sinuses were giving me fits. i was able to listen to most of the inauguration on the road tuesday, but i was taking a whiz during obama's swearing-in (there was no putting it off) and hit a dead zone with about 5 minutes left in his address. the texas hill country was beautiful. 80 mph speed limits in texas were nice too. most of the time on the road it was just me and trucks. from say, sacramento to tucson there were hundreds of RVs on the road as well. i think the prettiest scenery was in oregon/far northern california, followed by texas hill country, then new mexico.
here are the numbers:
shortest day - 428 miles
longest day - 792 miles
2973.4 miles driven in 5 days
125.965 gallons of gas used at an average price of $1.97 per gallon
had i run my tank empty every time, i would have used 8.4 tanks of gas.
i got 23.6 miles per gallon, or $.08 per mile (bruce isn't that aerodynamic)

provisions used
12 cans of red bull
5 boxes of granola bars
half a case of water
10 packs of cigarettes

What Kind of Serial Killer Would You Be?
Your Result: Organized and Goal-Oriented

You're a planner. You'd carefully plot each murder, and carry it out methodically. You'll kill them in one location and move them to another later, and you'll study up your forensic science. The good news is, you're much harder to catch.
You won't kill for the person, you'll kill for material gain. Your goal is finance, not a psychopathic compulsion- but you have absolutely no problem killing as many people as necessary to get what you want.

Organized and Mission-Oriented

Organized and Hedonistic
